Everything you need to know about Qurbani ke masail — eligibility, valid animals, age requirements, timing, and common mistakes explained clearly.
Qurbani (also called Udhiyah in Arabic) is one of the most important acts of worship in Islam, performed every year during the days of Eid ul Adha. It is a Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS) — and for those who meet the conditions, it is Wajib (obligatory).
Yet many Muslims in Karachi have questions: Am I required to give Qurbani? Which animals count? How old must the animal be? Can I do it online? This guide answers all of it — clearly and completely — based on authentic Islamic jurisprudence (Hanafi school, which is predominant in Pakistan).
Qurbani is obligatory (Wajib) on every Muslim who meets ALL four of these conditions simultaneously:
Must be a follower of Islam. Non-Muslims are not required to perform Qurbani.
Must have reached the age of puberty. Qurbani on behalf of minor children is recommended but not obligatory.
Must be of sound mind. Qurbani is not obligatory on those who are mentally incapacitated.
Must not be traveling (musafir). Travelers covering a journey of 48 miles or more are exempt.
Must possess wealth equal to or above the nisab threshold (net assets in excess of basic needs).
Qurbani is not obligatory on a slave (abd). Relevant historically; not applicable in modern context.
If your net assets (savings, jewellery, investments — minus debts and basic necessities) equal or exceed these thresholds on the days of Qurbani, it is obligatory for you.
Only specific animals are permissible (halal) for Qurbani. Random animals like chickens, rabbits, or fish do not count.
An animal below the minimum age is not valid for Qurbani, even if it looks healthy and large. Age matters.
| Animal | Minimum Age | Exception | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goat (Bakra) | 1 Year | None | ✓ Valid |
| Sheep (Dumba / Bhedh) | 1 Year | A sheep of 6 months that is large enough to appear 1 year old is acceptable (Hanafi ruling) | ✓ Valid |
| Cow (Bail / Gaay) | 2 Years | None | ✓ Valid |
| Buffalo (Bhains) | 2 Years | None | ✓ Valid |
| Camel (Oont) | 5 Years | None | ✓ Valid |
| Chicken / Fish / Rabbit | — | Not a Qurbani animal regardless of age | ✗ Invalid |
The Qurbani animal must be free from obvious defects. Here are the conditions it must satisfy:
An animal that is clearly and completely blind in one or both eyes is not valid for Qurbani.
An animal so lame it cannot walk to the place of slaughter on its own is invalid. Minor lameness is permissible.
Obvious, severe illness that makes the animal visibly weak or affects its health invalidates the Qurbani.
An animal born without ears, or whose ears have been cut off by more than a third, is not valid.
An animal so emaciated its bones are visible and it has no fat/marrow is not valid. Lean but healthy is fine.
An animal whose tail has been cut off by more than a third is not valid for Qurbani.
If the animal can walk on all legs and reach the slaughter area, minor limping does not invalidate Qurbani.
A castrated goat or bull is perfectly valid — many scholars consider it superior as it typically has more meat.
If the majority of teeth are intact and the animal can graze normally, missing some teeth does not invalidate Qurbani.
An animal born without horns, or with a broken horn, is valid as long as it is healthy otherwise.
Qurbani is only valid on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah — after the Eid prayer on Day 1.
Whether you slaughter yourself or appoint a representative (wakeel), these conditions must be met:
Intention (niyyah) is made in the heart before the slaughter. You do not need to say it aloud, though it is recommended. For cow shares, your share partner makes niyyah on your behalf.
The animal should be laid on its left side, facing the Qibla (direction of Makkah). The slaughterer should also face the Qibla.
The slaughterer must say "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" (بِسْمِ اللهِ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ) immediately before the cut. Forgetting to say it intentionally makes the animal haram.
The knife must be very sharp. The windpipe (trachea), food pipe (oesophagus), and both jugular veins must all be cut in one swift motion. Sawing or multiple cuts cause unnecessary pain and are discouraged.
Wait until the animal is fully still and all blood has drained before beginning to skin or cut. This is both a Shariah requirement and a hygiene standard.
Divide the meat into three parts: one for your household, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor. It is permissible to give all of it to the poor.
The meat of Qurbani must be distributed in three equal parts. This is Mustahab (recommended), not strictly obligatory, but strongly advised by scholars.
The person performing Qurbani cannot sell the meat, fat, skin, bones, or any part of the Qurbani animal for personal income. It may be given as charity or used at home.
It is not permissible to pay the butcher (qassai) with meat or skin from the Qurbani animal as part of his wages. Pay the butcher separately in cash.
The skin (khaal) of the Qurbani animal can be given to a madrasah or charitable organization, used at home as a mat or container, or given to the poor. It cannot be sold by the one giving Qurbani for personal benefit.
These mistakes are widespread in Karachi. Avoid them to ensure your Qurbani is fully valid.
Many families rush to slaughter early morning on Eid Day. This is invalid — slaughter can only begin after the Eid Salah concludes in your city.
Buying a goat that "looks big" but is under 1 year old is a common mistake. Always confirm the animal's age with the seller before purchasing.
Giving the butcher meat or skin as his wage is not permitted. Many families do this unknowingly — it invalidates part of the Qurbani's spiritual benefit.
Selling the skin and using the money personally (buying groceries, etc.) is not permitted for the one performing Qurbani.
If you are doing a cow share, all 7 portions must be for Qurbani (not half for aqeeqa, half for Qurbani unless all portions intend worship/sacrifice).
The person performing Qurbani should not cut their hair or nails from the 1st of Dhul Hijjah until after slaughter. This applies to the one giving Qurbani, not the whole family.
Qurbani Express selects healthy, age-verified animals. Every slaughter follows Shariah conditions: Bismillah, Qibla-facing, expert halal butchers — and video confirmation sent to you.
