What You Can and Cannot Do With Qurbani Gosht
These rules are often misunderstood. Here is the clear, complete list.

Keep all the meat for yourself (if needed)
If you are in need or have limited means, it is permissible to keep all the meat for your household. However, this misses the spirit of Qurbani. Giving to the poor is part of the worship.

Give all the meat to the poor
It is permissible — and highly virtuous — to give the entire Qurbani to the poor and needy. Many scholars encourage this for those who are financially comfortable.

Give meat to non-Muslims
The Hanafi position allows giving Qurbani gosht to non-Muslim neighbors or friends as a gift. It is a good deed and builds goodwill. However, it should ideally come from the "relatives and friends" portion, not the sadaqah (poor) portion.

Your household portion can be stored in the freezer and consumed over days or weeks. There is no requirement to eat it all on Eid Day itself.

Sell the Qurbani meat for cash

Pay the butcher (qassai) with Qurbani meat
Giving the butcher meat or skin as part of his wages is not permitted. His fee must be paid separately in cash. You may give the butcher meat as a gift (above and beyond his wages), which is permissible.

Give meat to a restaurant as payment
Using Qurbani gosht to pay for services — e.g., giving a restaurant owner meat in exchange for cooking it — is not permissible. However, giving it as a gift to a poor restaurant owner for free is fine.
Qurbani Khaal (Skin) — Complete Rules
The skin (khaal) of the Qurbani animal has its own set of rulings. Many families in Karachi are unsure about what to do with it.

- Sell the skin and use the money for personal expenses (groceries, bills, etc.)

- Sell the skin and give the money to the mosque (this is also not allowed — donate the skin directly instead)
Common Karachi practice: Many families give the khaal to organizations like Edhi Foundation, JDC, or their local masjid. This is the easiest and most rewarding approach — and it is fully permissible.
Who Counts as "Poor" — Fuqara & Masakeen
The poor (ghurba) portion should go to those who genuinely lack financial means. In Karachi, these are people all around us — often overlooked.
Daily-Wage Workers
Labourers, rickshaw drivers, construction workers — those without stable income who may not eat meat for months at a time.
Domestic Staff
Your kaam wali, driver, chowkidar, or mali. Giving them a generous portion of Qurbani meat is a highly recommended practice.
Needy Neighbours
Neighbours who are financially struggling. The Prophet ﷺ emphasised the rights of neighbours — they have first claim after family.
Widows & Orphans
Single mothers, widows, and children without fathers who cannot afford meat for their families on Eid.
Madrasa Students
Students at religious schools who live away from home and depend on community support for food.
Below Nisab Threshold
Anyone whose total net assets are below ~Rs. 110,000–150,000 in 2026 qualifies as a recipient of Qurbani gosht sadaqah.
Important: The person performing Qurbani and their household members cannot receive from the "poor" portion of their own Qurbani — even if they are themselves in need. The poor portion must go to others outside the household.
Scholars' Views on Distribution Flexibility
Not all situations are identical. Here's how scholars approach common distribution questions.
Hanafi Can I keep more than 1/3?
Yes — the three-part division is Mustahab (recommended), not Wajib. You may keep more than 1/3 for your household if there is a genuine need. However, scholars emphasise that giving to the poor is the higher virtue. The majority of Pakistani scholars recommend following the 1/3 rule as it reflects the Sunnah.
Consensus Can I give it all to the poor?
Yes. All major Hanafi scholars agree that giving the entire Qurbani animal's meat to the poor is permissible and highly virtuous. This is especially encouraged for those who are comfortable financially and want to maximise the charitable impact of their Qurbani.
Hanafi What if I'm poor myself?
If you are eligible to perform Qurbani (own nisab) but are in financial difficulty, you may keep all the meat for your household. You are not required to give to others if doing so would leave your family without food. However, giving even a small amount to the needier poor remains rewarding.
Hanafi Nafl Qurbani — same rules?
Yes. The distribution rules for Nafl (voluntary) Qurbani are the same as for Wajib Qurbani. Some scholars say Nafl Qurbani meat cannot be eaten by the one offering it at all, but the majority Hanafi position permits eating from it as well.
